Peyronie’s Disease – Medical Definition
Peyronie’s disease is a medical condition where scar tissue (also known as plaque) forms under the skin of the penis. This can result in penile curvature during the flaccid state or while achieving erection. The plaque builds up inside the penis, in the thick elastic membrane called the tunica albuginea. This fibrous scar tissue buildup inside the penis may cause a penis to have a curved or hourglass appearance.

Peyronie’s disease can be caused by a variety of factors. One of the main reasons is due to repeated penile injury, typically during sex or physical activity. Penises vary in shape and size and having some penile curvature isn’t necessarily a cause for concern. In Peyronie’s disease, the bend is significant, and may occur along with pain or interfere with normal activities such as sexual function or urination.
